Ontario’s Licensing Journey

What Is the Difference Between G1, G2, Full G and BDE?

Ontario uses a graduated licensing system. New drivers normally progress from a G1 learner’s licence to a G2 licence and then earn a full Class G licence by passing two separate road tests.

Stage One

G1 Learner’s Licence

G1 is the first level of Ontario’s graduated licensing system. It is earned after meeting the application requirements and passing the vision and knowledge tests.

  • Drive only with a qualified accompanying driver
  • Follow all G1 restrictions and zero-alcohol rules
  • Build basic driving experience before the G2 test
  • Pass the first road test to earn a G2 licence
Normal waiting period: 12 months before taking the G2 road test. Completing an approved BDE course may reduce this to eight months.
Stage Two

G2 Driver’s Licence

G2 is the second level. After passing the first road test, you can generally drive without an accompanying driver, although novice-driver conditions still apply.

  • Drive independently on Ontario roads
  • Continue following applicable G2 restrictions
  • Develop highway and advanced driving experience
  • Pass the Class G road test to become fully licensed
Required experience: You normally need at least 12 months of driving experience with your G2 before taking the Class G road test.
Final Stage

Full Class G Licence

A full Class G licence is earned after successfully completing the advanced G road test, which includes major-road and highway driving.

  • Full Class G driving privileges
  • No longer part of graduated licensing
  • Advanced driving ability assessed during the test
  • Must continue following all Ontario driving laws
Final requirement: Pass the Class G road test before your novice licence expires and complete Ontario’s graduated licensing process.
Important Difference

BDE Is a Course, Not a Licence

Beginner Driver Education is an optional MTO-approved training program for new drivers. It supports the early learning stage but does not replace either Ontario road test.

  • BDE is mainly designed for beginner G1 drivers
  • It may reduce the G1 waiting period from 12 to eight months
  • It does not replace the G2 or G road test
  • It does not reduce the normal G2-to-G waiting period

Already Have Your G2 Licence?

You do not need to complete a BDE course before booking G road test preparation. These Oakville lessons are specifically designed for eligible G2 drivers preparing for the final Class G road test.

Common Questions Answered

G Road Test Preparation FAQs for Oakville Drivers

Find answers about eligibility, highway experience, lesson planning, test-day preparation and booking your private G driving lessons with Abdul in Oakville.

Who can take G road test preparation lessons in Oakville?

These lessons are primarily designed for drivers who currently hold a valid G2 licence and are preparing for Ontario’s final Class G road test. You should also confirm that you meet DriveTest eligibility and highway-experience requirements before your scheduled test.

What skills are covered during G test preparation?

Your preparation may include highway entering and exiting, merging, lane changes, speed control, following distance, observations, intersection handling and responding safely to traffic conditions. The lesson focus is adjusted according to your current driving ability.

How many lessons will I need before my G road test?

The right number of lessons depends on your driving experience, highway confidence, current habits and the time remaining before your test. Abdul can assess your driving and explain which areas need more practice. Additional lessons can be arranged when required.

Do I need highway-driving experience before taking the G test?

Yes. Before a Class G road test, DriveTest requires you to declare your recent experience on highways with speed limits of at least 80 km/h and/or 400-series highways.

DriveTest currently requires at least five qualifying highway trips during the three months before your test. Confirm the latest requirement directly with DriveTest when booking.

Can I practise shortly before my scheduled road test?

Preparation may be scheduled close to your test when lesson time is available. However, booking earlier gives you more time to correct habits and practise independently. Contact Abdul as soon as your test date and DriveTest location are confirmed.

Is a driving-school vehicle included for my road test?

Vehicle use or test-day support depends on the package and available add-ons you select. Review the registration details or ask Abdul before booking so you understand exactly what is included. Any vehicle used for the test must satisfy DriveTest’s road-test vehicle requirements.

Does taking preparation lessons guarantee that I will pass?

No driving school or instructor can guarantee a road-test result. Preparation helps you identify weaknesses, improve important skills and understand safer driving habits. Your final result depends on your performance during the official DriveTest examination.

Can I book lessons if my G test is outside Oakville?

Availability may depend on your selected DriveTest Centre, test time and the support you require. Send Abdul your test location before registering so he can confirm the most suitable lesson or test-day option.

How do I book G road test preparation in Oakville?

Select Oakville as your location, choose the G road test preparation package and provide your test date, time and DriveTest Centre. You can also contact Abdul directly by WhatsApp or phone if you need help choosing the right preparation.
